Use

The Featherlite 5300 series manhole ladder addresses a very specific need in the underground infrastructure industry: safely descending and ascending in a manhole whose standard opening does not allow the use of a conventional straight ladder. It is the reference tool for network technicians working on water, sewer, telecommunications, and underground power distribution systems.

A Profile Sized for Manhole Openings

The 12-inch (30.5 cm) outside width and 9 5/8-inch (24.4 cm) inside width are designed to pass through standard manhole openings while maintaining sufficient width for comfortable, safe climbing. This dimension is significantly narrower than other Featherlite straight ladders (5600D and 6100: 16 11/16 inch outside), which cannot be used for this type of access.

Rail Protection Against Manhole Rims

The most dangerous contact point when using a ladder in a manhole is the concrete or cast iron rim of the opening, which can damage the fiberglass rails through friction or impact. The 36-inch (91 cm) vinyl plastic protectors installed on each rail create a durable barrier that absorbs this contact without degrading the load-bearing structure of the ladder. The vinyl hoop ends at the top of the rails provide additional protection during setup.

Safe for Electrical Environments

Non-conductive fiberglass is the required material for work near underground electrical cables or equipment. Unlike aluminum ladders, it does not conduct electricity and protects the user in case of accidental contact with an energized conductor.

180° Boots for Versatile Use

The 180° thermoplastic elastomer swivel boots allow the ladder to be installed on either side, a useful flexibility in confined spaces where setup orientation is constrained by the manhole configuration.

Compliance Information

Type IAA duty rating: 375 lbs (170 kg). Compliant with ANSI A14.5 (fiberglass portable ladders) and OSHA. The 5300 series is not CSA approved: verify provincial regulatory requirements before professional use in Canada.
